Which Skate Sharpening / Profiling Is Best For Me?

Sharpening........

When you get your skates sharpened, the "cut" or "sharpen" refers to the curve sharpened into the blade. That sharpen affects how much grip or glide you get on the ice. It’s measured as a fraction of an inch like 1/2", 5/8", etc.

Here’s how the most popular sharpen choices break down:

  • 3/8"

Strong bite, sharp edges, great for tight turns and quick stops.

Downsides: less glide, more friction. Often used by lighter players or those who want maximum control.

  • 1/2" Better known as "Regular"

Balanced grip and glide. This is the most common choice for recreational and intermediate players.

  • 5/8"

More glide, less bite. Good for heavier players or those who skate fast and want efficiency.

  • 3/4"

Maximum glide, minimal bite. Preferred by some advanced players or goalies who rely on smooth movement.

Profiling........

Hockey skate profiling is the process of reshaping the blade’s radius to better match your speed, agility, balance, and playing position on the ice. Profiling changes how the blade contacts the ice along its length.

Every skate blade has a radius from 9' to 13'. Shorter radius profiles will provide more agility, and longer radius will provide more speed and stability.

Here’s how the most popular profile choices break down:

Single radius

  • One consistent curve - 9', 10', etc.

  • Simple and predictable.

  • Good for beginners or players who want a neutral feel.

Quad or Multi-Radius

  • Different radius blended along the blade (e.g., 9’ front / 11’ back).

  • Lets you have agility in the toe and stability in the heel portion.

  • Very popular with higher-level players and playing defence.

Zuperior or Ellipse

  • Add flatter sections for glide and speed.

  • Often used by advanced skaters and forwards.

Profiling can help with:

  • Acceleration.

  • Top-end speed.

  • Turning radius.

  • Balance point.

  • Stability.

Should you get profiled?

You’ll benefit most if:

  • You feel off balance or shaky on your skates.

  • Your skates feel heavy.

  • You want more speed or agility without changing skate brands or fit.

  • You’re playing at a competitive level.

  • You’ve outgrown stock blade profiles.

If you're just starting out in hockey, start with a 1/2" sharpen with no profiling. As you progress, see what feels best for you. Some stores, like All Team Sports in Cambridge, have demo blades that you can try. This will help with your decision.
