How to become a better Defenceman.

Sometimes, as players and coaches, we overcomplicate the game in our heads. We second-guess ourselves, hesitate on decisions, and make the game harder than it needs to be.

The reality is that becoming a better defenceman doesn’t have to be complicated.

Here are three simple habits that can make a big difference.

1. Never Get Beat One-on-One

Commonly referred to as defensive-side positioning, this is one of the simplest and most important concepts for a defenceman.

Yet the temptation to cheat on a play, reach for the puck, or get caught flat-footed can quickly put you in a bad position.

Anticipate the direction and speed of the player you are defending. Take away the middle of the ice, momentarily give him the outside, and then use your timing, skating, and angling skills to keep your body between him and your net.

As long as he still has to get through you, he hasn’t beaten you. Don’t over complicate it.

2. Keep Your Head on a Swivel

As a defenceman, your head should always be on a swivel.

You need to be aware of more than just the puck. Constantly scan the ice and know where both your opponents and your teammates are positioned.

It’s easy to get locked in on the puck and lose track of the player you are responsible for.

Before the puck arrives, shoulder check, scan, and identify your options.

Know where the pressure is coming from. Know where your support is and know where your opponent is. The more information you have, the better decisions you can make.

3. The First Pass Is the Most Important

This sounds simple, but a defenceman who can consistently make a clean first pass to a defensive partner or supporting forward is incredibly valuable to their team. A good first pass can turn a defensive-zone possession into an offensive opportunity in seconds. Make the pass early, accurate and put it on your teammate’s tape and allow them to play with speed. Defence isn’t about making the spectacular play. It’s about consistently making the right play.

Keep it simple.

-Don’t get beat one-on-one.

-Keep your head on a swivel.

-Make a good first pass.
